Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 5 oz mini marshmallows
  • 3 c puffed rice cereal (like Rice Krispies)
  • Red and blue candy melts (a small handful of each)
  • White chocolate (roughly chopped, a small handful)
  • Red, white, and bluesprinkles

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  2. Pour in the rice cereal and stir well until fully coated. Pour in the rice cereal and stir well until fully coated.
  3. While still slightly warm, sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles and press them in gently.
  4. Let the mixture cool fully, then use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats.
  5. Melt the red and blue candy melts separately, and melt the white chocolate. Drizzle all three colors over the stars for a fun, patriotic finish.

Notes

  • Use fresh marshmallows. You want the mini marshmallows to be nice and soft. Those that aren't as fresh start to get harder and won't melt as well.
  • When melting the butter and marshmallows together, don't have the heat too high. You want to go low and slow so that they melt and combine nicely.
  • Decorate the rice krispie treats while they're warm. This helps the sprinkles stick to the treats and not fall off.
