Ingredients

  • 7 apples peeled, cored, and sliced into wedges
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter cold, cut into small cubes
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • Pinch of salt

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • 8x8-inch baking dish
  • Paring knife or apple peeler
  • Fork or pastry cutter (for mixing butter and flour)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Make the crumble: In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the butter and rub it between your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Prepare the apples: Peel and slice the apples evenly into wedges. Arrange them in the prepared baking dish in a single, even layer.
  4. Add the topping: Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples, covering them completely.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes or until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
  6. Cool slightly before serving to let the juices thicken.
  7. Serve warm — plain, or with a scoop of ice cream or a spoonful of yogurt.

Notes

  • For toddlers or infants (12 months+), let the crisp cool completely before serving. You can mash the baked apples slightly for a softer texture.
  • For adults, add a sprinkle of flaky sea salt or a drizzle of caramel for a gourmet twist.
  • To make it dairy-free, substitute butter with chilled coconut oil or a plant-based margarine.
